Strip Search, Episode 34 — Bob Eckstein

The one, the only Bob Eckstein. You know we love return guests here on Strip Search, which is why we were excited to welcome back acclaimed cartoonist and author Bob Eckstein to talk to Dave & Pete about his new book, " The Complete Book of Cat Names (That Your Cat Won't Answer To, Anyway) ." And that's not all: We also cover the return of local bookstores, refining the perfect cartoon idea, making the most out of the least lines, and much more. Actually, much MUCH more — this is a special, super-sized 75-minute episode, so strap in! In case you somehow missed it, Bob Eckstein is an award-winning writer, New Yorker cartoonist and author of The New York Times best-selling "Footnotes From the World’s Greatest Bookstores." His cartoons have appeared in Barron’s, MAD, McSweeny’s, National Lampoon, The New Yorker, The New York Times, and many others, and has been nominated twice for the National Cartoonist Society’s Gag Cartoonist of the Year. He is the edit...

Strip Search, Episode 33 — Crowden Satz

Crowden Satz is one of the funniest and most prolific single-panel gag cartoonists in the biz, and now the New Hampshire-by-way-of-California transplant is telling us the tricks of the trade on the latest Strip Search comic strip podcast.  As usual the podcast is available below in both audio and video versions, but this time we highly recommend the video option — to see our pretty faces, of course, but also because Crow (as his friends refer to him) was nice enough to provide multiple samples of his work while discussing his process and his progression during his cartooning career. (If audio is your bag, though, never fear: You'll see a bunch of those selfsame panels posted below.) Interested in learning more? Check out Crowden Satz on his website , at CartoonStock , at his Patreon page , on Facebook , or, if it's merch you're looking for, on Zazzle or Redbubble .  Also in this month's episode: We offer our take on the newly syndicated comic strip " Crabgrass ...

Strip Search, Episode 32 — Keith Knight

Keith Knight, Gentleman Cartoonist. All of the guests on the Strip Search podcast are superstars — but this month we've got a REALLY super superstar. For our latest episode,  cartoonist, activist and erstwhile Michael Jackson impersonator  Keith Knight — the man behind the nationally syndicated comic strips    “The Knight Life,” “The K Chronicles,” and “(Th)ink”   — goes deep with us on his Hulu TV show “ Woke ,” his " Black Mug Shots " project, his honorary doctorate, and what’s next for his illustrious career. Like the character based on him and his work in "Woke," Knight didn't necessarily start out as an activist cartoonist. But he found that the strips dealing with issues important to the Black community were the ones that resonated most. “I guess I was putting a perspective in comics that you just never saw quite often, so I became ‘that guy,’” Knight told us. “And I don't mind being that guy, because I think telling my story is super important n...

Strip Search, Episode 31 — David Milgrim

David Milgrim (a.k.a. Ann Droyd). That's right, it's another cartoonist named "David" in the hot seat here at "Strip Search." In our latest podcast, we sit down with " Goodnight iPad " author David Milgrim (above) to talk about society's technology troubles, the dangers of Elon Musk buying Twitter (spoiler alert: David is not fond of billionaires), and his own latest projects — including a series of comic essays and a brand new strip in the offing.  Listen or watch and see some of David's work below, and check out more at milgy.com . (And for highlights from the Q&A, see the feature on Milgrim at Boston.com .)

Strip Search, Episode 30 — Cagen Luse & Pat Sandy

It's two (two!) guests for the price of one in this month's episode of Strip Search, when we welcome Cagen Luse of Comics in Color , talking about this year's all-in-person festival in Boston, coming April 23; and Pat Sandy , the cartoonist behind the hilarious "Next Door Neighbors," discussing his new comic strip collection .  Cagen was here last year when the festival launched with a half online, half in person format, but this year the entire shebang will be held face-to-face at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. You'll hear from Cagen about what to expect , who'll be there — cartoonists Robb Armstrong (“Jump Start”), Joel Christian Gill (“Strange Fruit”), Ben Passmore (“Your Black Friend”), Ronald Wimberly (“Prince of Cats”), and Stephanie Yue (“Katie the Catsitter”), just to name a few — and why events like this are so important. You'll also hear about Cagen's own work — including his new strip " The Market ," about the real-world c...

Strip Search, Episode 29 — David Sipress

David Sipress, the author in repose. (Photo by Nina Subin) In this episode of "Strip Search: The Comic Strip Podcast," we had the great fortune to interview David Sipress — one of The New Yorker magazine’s most well-known contributors — about his wonderful new memoir “ What’s So Funny ,” a cartoonist’s origin story that delves into tortured family dynamics and hard-learned life lessons that can make you cringe and chuckle all at once. (The best kind of cringing, in our humble opinion.) Given our Boston base-of-operations, we of course chatted David up about his time at the Boston Phoenix, along with the seminal moment in Harvard Square that presaged his entrance into the world of professional cartooning. But we also got into his creative process, his influences, what makes a New Yorker cartoon a New Yorker cartoon (spoiler alert: there is no such thing, at least not anymore), and why cartoonists (and other creative folk) have an advantage over, well, everybody else: "F...

Strip Search, Episode 28 — Hillary Chute

Comics scholar Hillary Chute stands in front of a stained-glass image of an Art Spiegelman drawing, in a photo taken by cartoonist Alison Bechdel. How's that for synergy? So we're used to talking to people smarter than us here at Strip Search: The Comic Strip Podcast — but maybe not THIS MUCH smarter. Yes, "Strip Search" was truly honored to welcome Hillary Chute , a Distinguished Professor of English and Art & Design at Northeastern University who’s written numerous books on the comics art form — and edited one, due in November, called “ Maus Now ,” analyzing the far-reaching impacts of "Maus," Art Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize winning, seminal work about his father's experience in the Holocaust. To say she was delightful is an understatement, but don't take our word for it — you can listen to or watch the podcast below. Her expertise about "Maus" in particular offered the perfect opportunity to delve into the recent controversy over i...
